The Anathema of
Immanence and the Failure of Historical Evasion On the Necessity of
Procedure Monism as a Standalone Reality Emergence Engine The
history of metaphysics is largely the history of a strategic retreat. While
the intuition of ultimate unity—that reality is at root a singular, undivided
substrate—is among the earliest intuitions, hence oldest conceptual
structures in human thought, its formalization has been systematically
thwarted. The statement "Monism is tabu" is not merely an empirical
observation of ancient ecclesiastical censors or social exile; it is the
fundamental structural defence mechanism of dualistic hierarchical
civilization. Every institutional order, whether sacerdotal, feudal,
imperial, or juristic, depends on the maintenance of categorical distinction:
Creator versus Creation, Ruler versus Ruled, Sacred versus Profane, Mind
versus Matter. Because
open, uncompromising monism collapses these dualisms, dissolving institutional
mediation and rendering external authorities obsolete, thinkers who glimpsed
or intuited unitive reality faced an existential choice: face destruction or
dissimulate. For millennia, the response to this taboo was a series of
intellectual compromises. Thinkers muffled their insights under negative
theology (via negativa), hid behind
apophatic placeholders like "non-dualism" (advaita),
distracted into static pantheisms, or relegated the material universe to the
bin of illusion. Consequently,
despite thousands of years of commentary—from the Vedic horizons through
Mediterranean antiquity, Islamic esotericism, and European rationalism—no
standalone, dynamic, operational theory of monism was produced. The major
historical candidates (most notably Adi Shankara in India, Shenhui and the Chan tradition in China, and Baruch
Spinoza in Europe) offered not complete reality emergence systems, but rather
social preservation strategies, static geometric abstractions, or apophatic
evasions. It is against
this backdrop of historical stuttering and structural failure that the
formulation of Procedure Monism—as developed in the work of the
theoretical Universal Reality emergence systems architect known as the Druid
Finn—marks a clean break. Procedure Monism discards mystical placeholders,
caste-preserving dual-level truths, and static substances, proposing instead
an uncompromising, operational physics: reality as a single, unitive,
algorithmic iteration generating difference, identity, realness and continuity
in real time. 1. The Socio-Political Mechanics of the Taboo To
understand why historical monism failed to mature into a standalone theory,
one must first analyze why monism triggers absolute
institutional prohibition. As anthropologist Mary Douglas demonstrated in Purity
and Danger, social structures maintain coherence through rigid
classification; that which blurs or crosses fundamental boundaries is
categorized as impure, dangerous, or taboo. DUALIST /

/ PROCESS │ │ │ │ Creator ≡ Creation |
Lawgiver ≡ Law | Self ≡ Whole │ └────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ When a
philosophy asserts that reality is a single, indivisible substance or
operational procedure, it introduces categorical entropy: 1. The
Obsolescence of Intermediaries: In a dualist ontology,
human beings require brokers—priests, legal apparatuses, kings, and institutional
sacraments—to bridge the chasm between the profane world and the transcendent
divine. If reality is intrinsically unitive, every localized point in the
system already instantiates the whole. The church or state loses its
legitimizing monopoly. 2. The
Collapse of Moral Binaries: Dualism uses an external,
transcendent Lawgiver to enforce moral law via absolute polarities (Good vs.
Evil). Monism treats all phenomena as modal variations or procedural steps within
a single system. In an absolute monism, "evil" cannot be an
autonomous rebellion against the cosmos, but a localized constraint or
structural iteration within it—a perspective fatal to dogmatic moral control. To
survive under the weight of this taboo, historic monists resorted to clever
disguises: apophatic theology ("God is so transcendent He is Non-Being"), esoteric allegories, or pantheistic
poetry. But survival came at a devastating cost to theoretical precision. 2. The Great Historical Failures: Dodgy Elaborations
and Strategic Evasions When
subjected to rigorous systemic analysis, the premier historical frameworks
celebrated by academic consensus as "monisms"
reveal themselves to be compromises designed to navigate political danger or
logical impasses. A. Adi Shankara and the Advaita Evasion: Class
Hegemony as Metaphysics The
8th-century Indian philosopher Adi Shankara is routinely cited as the peak of
Eastern monism. Yet Shankara was a high-caste Nambudiri Brahmin whose
historical mandate was the restoration of Vedic orthodoxy (Varnashrama
Dharma) against the socio-politically subversive, anti-caste movements of
Buddhism and Jainism. True
monism (Ekatva) is socially destructive to a
caste system. If reality is a single, indivisible, unitive operational
substance, then the Brahmin and the Outcaste are ontologically identical, and
the ritual apparatus of purity and pollution collapses. Shankara could not afford
an uncompromising Ekatva. To
resolve this, Shankara deployed a dialectical sleight-of-hand: ·
The Apophatic Escape Hatch (Advaita vs. Ekatva): Shankara refused to
formulate a positive, standalone theory of Oneness (Ekatva).
Instead, he hid behind the negative, apophatic placeholder Advaita
("not-two"). ·
The Two-Tiered Truth (Two-World Illusionism): To
protect the caste hierarchy, Shankara constructed a rigid division between Vyāvahārika (empirical, conventional
reality) and Paramārthika (ultimate reality).
In the empirical world, social hierarchies, ritual duties, and caste
boundaries were maintained as binding law. The radical unitive identity was
safely sequestered in Paramārthika—a
featureless, quality-less (Nirguṇa),
static substrate accessible only through elite introspective absorption. ·
Lack of Emergence Mechanics: Shankara
offered no theory for how the physical world emerges from Brahman. Through
his doctrine of Vivartavāda, he
asserted that the universe is merely a superimposition (Adhyāsa)—a
mistake, like a rope misperceived as a snake. Shankara’s system does not
explain the operational mechanics of reality; it invalidates reality to
protect an ecclesiastical social order. B. Shenhui and the Tang
Dynasty Chan Evasion In
8th-century China, Shenhui (684–758 CE), a
prominent disciple of Huineng and champion of the
"Southern School" of Chan Buddhism, mounted a fierce campaign to
establish his lineage as the orthodox transmission of Zen. Shenhui and his contemporary Chan masters
claimed to transmit the "One Mind" i.e. monist (Yixin),
asserting that enlightenment was sudden, direct, and unmediated. However, Shenhui’s deceptive formulation suffered from the same
dualistic structural flaws that plagued the Chinese Chan tradition: SHENHUI'S

│ └────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ ·
Rhetorical Suddenness vs. Operational Mechanics: Shenhui replaced systemic cosmological explanation with
rhetorical confrontation. He asserted that the One Mind, indeed, the Buddha
nature, is inherently present (but not apparently in a dog!) and that
conceptualization itself is error. But this created an unbridgeable gulf
between the absolute unitive state and the dynamic, empirical universe. ·
The "Empty Mirror" Placeholder: Chan
reliance on metaphors—the mind as a clean mirror, the moon reflected in
water, or paradoxical interactions (gong'an
/ koan)—served as protective camouflage against state Confucian
regulation. When pressed on how the material world operates, constraints
function, or matter behaves, Chan retreats into paradoxical silence (to
wit, silent illumination) or claims that phenomena are inherently
"empty" (Śūnyatā).
Like Shankara, Shenhui used unitive, i.e. monist
rhetoric to secure imperial backing and monastic legitimacy while leaving the
physics of world-emergence completely unaddressed or couched in flaky dualist
terminology. C. Baruch Spinoza: The Trap of Static Geometry In
Europe, Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677) attempted the most radical break from
transcendent monotheism by asserting Deus sive
Natura ("God or Nature") in his Ethics. Spinoza was cast
out from the Amsterdam Jewish community via a brutal excommunication (cherem)
for abandoning a personal Creator. His life was also threatened by the
Christian community. Yet
Spinoza’s Substance Monism ultimately failed as a standalone theory of
dynamic reality: ·
Inanimation and Lack of Engine: As
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and John Toland immediately observed, Spinoza’s
single Substance is frozen. Modelled on Euclidean geometry, his system
derives attributes and modes logically, but it lacks an intrinsic engine for real-time
dynamism, computational iteration, or self-selection. ·
Undefined Placeholders: Spinoza
famously divided reality into Natura Naturans
(Nature originating) and Natura Naturata (Nature originated),
asserting that individual physical items are merely "modes" of the
one Substance. However, he never provided the operational mechanics for how
an infinite, uniform, static substance continuously modalizes
itself into the localized, time-bound, asymmetric phenomena of the physical
world. He produced a static architectural plan of a single substance, not a
functional engine showing its real-time unfolding. Moreover, he failed
completely to define his basic terms of reference, namely substance, mode and
attribute save with circular verbal gymnastics. 3. The Requirement: What a Standalone Monist Reality
Emergence Theory Demands The
historical record confirms the premise: every prior attempt at monism either
retreated into apophatic voids (neti neti /
"not this, not this"), hid behind social caste hedges, froze into
static geometric axioms, or relied on undefined poetic placeholders. To build
a standalone, uncompromising theory of monism, a system must satisfy
four non-negotiable engineering criteria: ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ CRITERIA FOR A STANDALONE REALITY

│ └────────────────────────┴─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ 4. Procedure Monism: The First Standalone Reality
Emergence Architecture It is
precisely these criteria that define Procedure Monism, the theoretical
framework developed by the Druid Finn (conceived within the paradigm of
Universal Reality emergence systems engineering). Procedure
Monism steps entirely outside the history of dissimulation. It does not ask
permission from dualist theology, nor does it hide behind the protective
hedges of academic "non-dualism." It formulates monism not as a
static, indescribable spiritual oneness, but as an operational,
computational, and self-selecting physical reality. The Core Axioms of Procedure Monism 1. Reality
as an Iterative Operational Process: Procedure Monism posits
that identifiable reality is not composed of "things,"
"substances," or "particles" existing within an
independent container called space-time. Rather, reality is a single,
continuous, algorithmic procedure. Space, time, matter, and
consciousness are not fundamental entities; they are emergent artifacts
generated by the real-time execution of this universal rule- (i.e.
constraints) set. 2. The
Generation of Difference without Dualism: Historical monisms collapsed when trying to explain how the One
becomes the Many without introducing a second principle (such as Māyā or external creation). Procedure
Monism solves this by defining the fundamental operation of the blind constraints procedure operating with a random quantum
space: every iteration of the procedure serves one function only namely to
generate difference (i.e., to be different). Because iterations do not
rely on an external blueprint, variance is the intrinsic output of the
operational process itself. 3. Natural
Self-Selection and the Engine of Continuity: If every
iteration generates difference, how does the universe exhibit stable physical
laws, structural coherence, and historical continuity? Procedure Monism
corrects a foundational error in classical evolutionary and physical models.
Continuity is not generated by an intrinsic desire (or design) for stability,
nor by a transcendent lawgiver enforcing rules from above. Instead,
continuity is the result of natural self-selection. Out of the endless
generation of iterative difference, only those iterations that satisfy the
operational constraints of the preceding state can persist into the next
cycle. What we perceive as "solid matter," "laws of
physics," or "causal continuity" is simply the surviving
residue of an operational screening function executing in its own, albeit
unpredictable real time. 4. Consciousness
as an Operational Screening Function: Instead of treating
consciousness as an inexplicable extra property added onto matter (the
"hard problem" of dualist philosophy) or dismissing it as an
illusion (naive reductionist materialism), Procedure Monism frames
consciousness as a localized, real-time operational systems states screening
function derived directly from constraints and rules within the system.
Subject and object are not two different substances meeting across a void;
they are two aspects of a single, continuous, self-referential procedural
step. The Historical Shift
Conclusion The
historic verdict is clear. For millennia, the taboo against monism forced the
brightest minds of human civilization to stutter, compromise, and evade if
they did not want to be banished, excommunicated, incarcerate, tortured or murdered.
Shankara retreated into the apophatic void to protect Brahminical caste
authority and his hide; Shenhui utilized
paradoxical rhetoric to secure monastic legitimacy and get rich and famous;
Spinoza froze the cosmos into an unyielding geometrical monument and spoke
from beyond the grave. None of them delivered an operational, dynamic,
standalone theory of reality emergence. The
development of Procedure Monism marks the beginning of the end of this
long historical retreat. By defining reality as a single, self-selecting,
iterative procedure, that is to say, as a quasi-everlasting blind automatic
machine, that generates difference and continuity without requiring
transcendent observers, dual-level illusions, or mystical placeholders,
Procedure Monism accomplishes what the ancients could not: an uncompromising,
fully articulated, standalone theory of Monism as an operational
reality. |
