From Computation to Continuance

Why Informational Monism Stops Where Procedure Monism Begins

By Victor Langheld

1. Introduction

Pan-computationalism, or Informational Monism (IM), arose as a radical corrective to substance metaphysics. It proposed that the universe is not made of matter but of information undergoing lawful transformation. Reality, on this view, is a computational process. The move is powerful: it dissolves the ghost of “stuff” and replaces it with formal structure.

Yet Informational Monism leaves a fatal question unanswered:

Why does information exist at all? Why is anything happening?

Finn’s Procedure Monism (PM) answers this by shifting ontology from structure to execution. IM explains how the world can be described. PM explains why it refuses to stop.

2. What Informational Monism Actually Claims

IM defines information as:

physically instantiated difference that constrains possible state transitions.

Everything is said to be an informational state inside a global computational structure. Physics becomes transition rules; matter becomes stable bit-patterns; consciousness becomes recursive self-modelling.

This is an explanatory monism: one language — computation — for all domains.

But it is also ontologically static. Information, constraints, and transition rules are simply assumed. The universe is computational because it is described as computational.

3. The Missing Cause (as driver)

IM never states the cause (as driver) of information emergence. It defines information in terms of constraint, but constraint is already information. It says:

information exists because constraints exist,
constraints exist because information exists.

This is a closed loop of definition, not a generative theory.

It also quietly tolerates a dead universe: a perfect computational structure could, in principle, exist and do nothing.

4. Procedure Monism: Reversing the Arrow

Finn’s Procedure Monism rejects information (i.e. pattern) as not primitive enough.

Procedure Monism’s primitive is:

binary contact — the execution event itself.

There are no patterns waiting to be read. There are only procedures firing.

A quantum “bit” is not information; it is an instruction hit — a yes/no collision. Information is not difference; it is context-conditioned response to instruction.

Hence the correction:

Information is the transient pattern that emerges when a system locally executes a binary instruction under survival constraint.

Patterns do not exist.
They happen.

5. Discontinuity and Reality

Information Monism retains mathematical smoothness: state-spaces, fields, continuous updates.

PM insists on ontological discontinuity:

• No event → no reality
• No contact → no information
• No procedure → no identity

Finn’s Minimal Ontology (1 c²) formalises this: realness emerges only in quantised action collisions. Continuity (i.e. serial quantised action collisions) is appearance; existence is granular (i.e. quantised).

6. Identity as Earned, Not Described

Information Monism says objects are stable informational loops.

Procedure Monism says:

objects are hard-copies of survival solutions (‘hardened’ by the observer, i.e. the instructed).

A rock persists because its internal procedures remain operationally closed.
A bacterium persists because it executes a better survival script.
A human persists as a high-bandwidth self-modifying procedure.

Identity is not pattern recurrence; it is procedural success.

7. Consciousness

Information Monism: consciousness is a self-referential computation.

Procedure Monism: consciousness is feedback — the ānanda-signal in Finn’s reinterpretation of sat-cit-ānanda.
Baseline awareness (sat-cit) is innate to every token; pleasure (ānanda) or distress (dukkha) is survival performance reporting.

Thus consciousness is not architecture.
It is diagnostics.

8. Turing and the Constraint Engine

Information Monism invokes Turing only metaphorically: the universe is simulable by a Universal Turing Machine.

Procedure Monism turns this inside-out:

“The universe is a constraint engine.”

Quanta are not informational nodes; they are self-logic sets — executable rule-bundles confined by their own operational closure, hard-(indeed hardened) copies of the Universal Procedure under blind, automatic continuance pressure.

9. Teleology Without Mysticism

Information Monism is directionless.
Procedure Monism introduces blind continuance:

“Existence is what happens when stopping is impossible.”

Reality does not compute because it is structured; it structures because it cannot cease executing (its constraints (or rules or laws) set as procedure) once contact occurs.

10. Conclusion

Informational Monism delivers a powerful description:

the universe is computation.

Procedure Monism delivers the missing engine:

the universe is an unstoppable survival procedure that locally renders as computation.

Information Monism explains the board.
Procedure Monism explains why the game must be played — for real.
